Let's Have a Little Talk About Acne

Who has never had acne in their entire lives? In as much as I want to raise my hand and say I've never had one, I can't do that. Although I consider myself having pretty good skin, I still get bumps and zits every now and then especially when I am stressed, when I have tried a product that does not work well with my skin, or when I get the raging hormones time of the month. A lot of teenagers and even adults are battling with acne and it is something that I believe is one of the reasons why certain people are not confident about their looks, thus, the low self-esteem. I am not a skin expert and neither am I a dermatologist but as most of you may not know, I am always on the look out for products that can help me with the zits I get on certain occasions so I would like to share some of these info to you guys.

Before you look for treatments for your breakouts, it is important to determine the cause why your skin is having such problems. Sometimes, just a change of habit works. Here are a few of the most common causes of breakouts aside from the usual known causes (stress, anxiety, period) unbeknownst to some of us:

1. The things we put on our face. 

Do you have a complex beauty routine or do you only use a couple of products on your skin? It doesn't matter. Some of our skin care products and makeups are the actual culprit as to why we get acne. Just imagine piling on layers of products on your face - toner, serum/moisturizer, primer or makeup base, liquid foundation or bb cream, setting powder or powder foundation, then a setting spray. Do you think your skin can breathe freely? And most importantly, are you sure you are washing off everything when you cleanse your face? Even if we have a very simple routine like cleanse-tone-moisturize-foundation, some of these products could still clog our pores that could result to zits. Aside from that, our cosmetic sponges and brushes have bacteria from leftover makeup and oils that can be transferred onto the skin if not cleaned regularly. These acne that are caused by these topical products are what is being referred to as Acne Cosmetica. That's new to me but it's nice to learn that there is a specific term for acne caused by skin care and cosmetics.

2. Have you ever gotten an advice from people to use toothpaste to treat your pimple? 

For some, it might have worked but some of the ingredients on our toothpaste can be quite harsh on the skin that instead of treating it, it will just aggravate your pimple.

3. Do you spend all day talking on your cellphone or simply holding it and not letting it free from your grasp?

Whenever our hands touch something, we get bacteria and dirt and that gets transferred on the surface of our mobile phones And then we touch our face. Wiping it clean with a wet tissue or antibacterial wipes will in a way lessen its dirt.

4. Work out tools and materials. 

Gyms and yoga classes are public and people share those gears and mats with each other. So just imagine all the sweat and dirt these things have accumulated from all of those who have used them before you and you get a lot of those on your hands, arms, feet, you put your towel on top of those and then you wipe your face. Ack! I know, right? An alcohol or cleansing tissues would do you a lot of good. Or if you can keep your towel inside your bag and just bring it out when you need it, I think that's a pretty good option.

5. The most common thing I have mentioned here is touching your face. 

I think this is pretty self-explanatory and I believe a lot of people already know this but I think it's worth mentioning. You touch a lot of things with your hands and they get all the dirt. And then you touch your face with it. A hand sanitizer will surely come in handy if you can't find a washroom to wash your hands first if you can't keep them from touching your face.

6. The food we eat.

What we eat and our diet reflects on our skin. So cut down on too much greasy and fatty food.

7. Water intake.

Drink lots of water. Aside from being good for digestion, it also helps hydrate us, making our skin healthier and better.

8. Prescription Medicine.

Pills for female hormones and steroids are notorious when it comes to causing pimples. There could be other medicines so you might want to ask your doctor about it as he prescribes those medicines to you so you'll know what to expect.

9. Other more serious health and skin conditions such as rosacea, hormonal imbalance and PCOS so it is always best to consult your doctor about it especially if none of the over the counter and natural treatments help.

Now, speaking of treatments, you can do some DIYs as a lot of the ingredients can be found in your kitchen. These are mostly inexpensive and natural too. You can make face masks out of honey, milk, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, turmeric, green tea, oatmeal, cinnamon. 

I personally like mixing brown sugar with milk or oatmeal and honey to exfoliate my skin. For spot treatments, I use apple cider vinegar alone and dot it on the pimple/s and I wake up to a dry pimple. You can mix some of those ingredients I have mentioned and there are a lot of recipes for DIY natural masks you can find online.

This is kind of a lengthy post but it's nice to share some important information especially when it comes to taking care of our skin.

Oh My Face Looks Like a Map! On Blotchy Skin - Causes and Remedies

Have you ever looked in front of a mirror and notice how your skin looks uneven, with patches that appear red or brown? No, you don't have to just be a woman to see these on your skin. You can be a man or a woman, young or adult. These patches or blotches do not come with age alone. A lot of different factors can cause these to appear on your skin. If you are someone who has been dealing with these skin problems, continue reading the rest of this post as you might find something that can help you.

Okay, okay, I know that photo of me looks exaggerated but there are certain people in this world who are battling with such patches and blotches on their skin and that isn't even a funny thought. To some, having such skin problems may even cause lack of confidence and low self-esteem. Good thing is there are natural remedies for these conditions without even having to go under the knife and those painful cosmetic procedures (injection with huge needle alert!). But before we go ahead and tackle these natural remedies, let's discuss and educate ourselves a little with these blotches, shall we?

What is blotchy skin?

These are discolorations or pigmentation on the skin that appears like brown or red patches or blotches (hello, freckles!) on the skin caused by several factors such as skin damage due to excessive sun exposure without wearing proper sunscreen, rosacea, dermatitis, allergies, hormonal changes, acne, too much stress and anxiety, aging, intake of certain medications, and even genetic predisposition to name a few.

What can cause blotchy skin?

Here are some common and known causes of blotchy skin.

• Are you expecting a baby and so excited about motherhood? Aside from a baby, you can also expect hormonal changes during pregnancy. This is one of the factors that may cause you to have blotchy skin. Although not everyone experiences this which is really good, there are a few women who are dealing with this at this very moment. Imagine all the emotional roller coaster a pregnant woman has to go through and add the horror of seeing these discolorations and pigmentation on her skin. Not a very pretty thing to experience, right?

• I must admit that I am guilty of not religiously using sunscreen or sun protection and I take a huge risk exposing myself to the harmful rays of the sun. I have seen an increase on my freckles and sunspots on my arms, shoulders, and some on my cheeks. Freckles are cute on kids but not on adults so don't be like me and wear sunscreen whenever you have to go out or even inside the comforts of your own home as the lights on your ceiling also need some protection from. 

• Your boss sets a target unrealistically high, your co-worker stole your idea and presented it as her own, you got several Fs on your report card, your baby is crying non-stop and your husband won't even take shifts with you, and the pizza parlor delivered pepperoni when you wanted all the works on your pizza. Aren't all these stressful? Believe it or not, stress and anxiety can even cause all those bumps and blotches to appear on your skin. Acne is a classic example. When I get anxious over something, I get a nasty zit or two.

• I have atopic dermatitis and allergies so I easily get rashes on the affected area. Sometimes, just leaning on a table can cause these to appear on my arms. It's difficult but I have both medical and natural remedies for that.

• We all age, don't we? Unless you have found the Fountain of Youth (by all means, spill the beans!), you will age too. And sometimes, seeing age spots is inevitable so at a young age, go find skin care products that work for you. You might not see the effects right away but give it 30-40 years and you will be thankful you heeded my advice.

I can go on and on about what causes all these and if I do, it will probably take you an hour to finish reading so let's just skip to the natural remedies which is brilliant because you can find most of these in your kitchen.

• Who loves oatmeal? I do! Simply mix oatmeal with olive oil honey, or milk til you make a paste. All these ingredients have natural soothing properties. 

• I love yogurt especially mango-flavored ones but this time, let's use unflavored and plain ol' yogurt. All you have to do is apply it on your face and that's an instant yogurt mask. The say it's good for the tummy. What they fail to mention is that it's also good for your skin.

• Green tea. I can't think of anyone who hasn't heard of green tea as a natural remedy for acne and skin irritation. Make a green tea mask by adding rice flour on it until a paste is formed.

• Bananas. This is perfect especially for those who have dry skin. Mash a ripe banana and add olive or almond oil, lemon juice, egg yolk, and voila! You got yourself a banana mask. BUT be sure that you are not allergic to nuts before you add almond oil as it will just worsen your skin problem.

• Unrefined cocoa or shea butter. This is my personal favorite as it works quickly and the irritation is gone in just a few minutes. This is what I apply whenever my allergies flare up.

• Aloe vera gel. This is one of the most popular natural remedies for inflammation and skin irritation. Just be sure you don't get too much from your mom's plant, okay?

• Egg white. You can mix this with oatmeal or use it alone. I especially use this when I get burn marks from cooking. I continuously apply it on the burned part and like magic, it doesn't hurt and I no longer get blisters. BUT make sure you're not allergic to poultry.

• Lemon juice. I see this all the time when it's all about getting rid of hyper-pigmentation and dark spots. So it must really work. Just make sure you don't apply a little too much as it might inflame the skin even more because lemon juice is about 5-6% citric acid.

These are just some of the natural remedies that can be commonly found at home, perhaps the unrefined cocoa or shea butter an exception. But all these have been proven to work at some point all these years. Of course, taking care of your skin and body is the best preventive medicine from all these. Derma visits are a lot of times needed depending on the severity of the skin condition.

In the Limelight: Island Basics Sunshield Spray SPF 45+ All Natural Sunscreen Product Review

I admit, I have never been religiously using sunscreen for the past 29 years of my life even though I came to know the importance of using one for the skin. I have tried a few but for some reason, my face gets red just a couple of minutes upon application. Plus, my skin easily gets oily greasy especially with the Manila heat and humidity. The greasy part, I can easily just use a touch up powder but the redness it causes, that's something that has been baffling me for a while now. Applied sheerly, it still gets red and I sometimes even experience prickly heat especially when I'm under the sun. So I just skipped using sunscreen overall and relied heavily on makeup and skin care that offers some protection only to a certain extent even though I am certain that that isn't enough. When Soie Lisse sent me one of their packages, the Island Basics Sunshield Spray was included.. Of course, I was hesitant to use it given my history with sunscreens but what the heck, I still gave it a try. And after using it for 3 months now, I am ready to give it a review.

What I like:

• The texture. It isn't think like most sunscreens that I know of (except the one from Sunplay which is watery). It is runny though still creamy.
• The nozzle spray is a nice touch. It dispenses just the right amount I need as I have control over how much product I will spray from it.
• As I have atopic dermatitis and my skin is dry, I use Palmer's Cocoa Butter because it helps so that's something I can't just skip. What I do is spray a generous amount on my palm and mix it with a dollop of Palmer's and apply it all over my arms, legs, feet, and ears. Yes, my ears get itchy too.
• On my face, I mix a little with my facial moisturizer so it can be easily absorbed by my skin. I am currently using iWhite Korea Aqua Moisturizing Gel (which isn't whitening and reminds me so much of Neutrogena Hydroboost at a fraction of the price). The good thing is that I don't get red and no prickly sensation which is good. I usually concentrate and apply more on my forehead as it's usually the first to get darker/redder.
• It is water-based so it also gets easily absorbed by the skin on its own.
• Its packaging - a spray bottle with cap - makes it easy to bring wherever you go for re-application on the arms, or whatever body part you feel like applying this to. 
• Very affordable for Php 160/100mL bottle.
• Oh, a product of the Philippines too.

What I don't like:

• The scent is a tad too strong for my liking. That's another reason why I mix it with Palmer's Cocoa Butter because the latter neutralizes the strong scent. I still smell it but no longer as strong when used alone. Plus when I apply it on my face, I have to breathe through my mouth. It's probably just my sense of smell. 
• I don't feel like the protection it offers is enough especially if you're the outdoorsy type. But that's just a supposition on my part.

Overall rating: 3.75/5 The scent is the deal-breaker for me. But I'll keep using this because I like the consistency and my face doesn't get red with it which gets a big fat thumbs up from me.

Will I buy again? I would unless I find something that works just the same without the strong scent.

In the Limelight: L'Oreal Paris Hydrafresh Anti Shine Icy Gel Product Review

Here's a very quick post for today featuring a straight on review of one of the moisturizers I am alternating with my favourite Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel. I have been using it for a couple of months now after leaving it untouched in my drawer and it's about time I give it a review. 

L'Oreal Paris describes this as...

A light weight skin-cooling texture which brings an instant ocean splash to your skin, locking in a reserve of hydration and freshness. It controls your skin temperature to prevent perspiration and shine. Enriched with Zinc and Micro Sponge technology, it regulates the sebum and inhibits excessive oil production to bring an immediate mattifying action.

What I like:

• I like the refreshing feeling this moisturizer gives my skin.
• Texture is very light, non-sticky, and gets easily absorbed by the skin being a water-based or gel moisturizer that it is.
• It gives my face a satin finish as I wouldn't consider it matte. 
• I feel like it hydrates my skin.
• I do not get any break outs or allergic reaction from it.
• Reasonably priced at Php 495 for a 50ml jar with a shelf life of one year.
• Locally available at Watson's, SM, and other drugstores nationwide.

What I don't like:

• I find the scent a tad too strong for a skin care/moisturizer though it fades after a few seconds.
• Although I feel that it hydrates my skin, I find that it does not hydrate it as good as Neutrogena does.
• Not impressed with the oil control or the anti-shine part but still pretty good for a moisturizer.
• Cooling sensation doesn't really last that long.
• Needs a spatula as it's housed in a jar.

Overall rating: 3.5/5

Will I buy again? I think I'd consider this a nice alternative to Neutrogena Hydroboost for almost half the price but I'd still choose Hydroboost over this one at any time of the day. :)

What I like:

• Initially, I thought this was good for "oily skin" but as it turns out, this is for those with sensitive skin. Turns out to work just fine because lately, my combination-oily skin has been experiencing hypersensitivity these past few months and most products made for oily skin proved to be a little harsh for me. This one is gentle enough and does not strip the moisture off my face.
• Paired with Cetaphil, this does not cause any irritation to my skin, leaving it soft and supple after cleansing.
• This gently exfoliates my skin and it looks radiant each time.
• Does not cause any allergic reaction to my face.
• I like that it is natural and biodegradable. See, the word "natural" sometimes make me take a step back before putting it anywhere near my face due to my less than pleasant experiences with such products but this did a fab job.
• One sponge is good for 3-4 months use. Mine is 3 months and a half old and is still usable.
• Locally available online for only Php 365.

What I don't like:

• I made the mistake of squeezing the water out of it just a little too much and the pointed part just literally crumbled on my hand. Now I cannot use that part and that happens to be my fave because the shape is just right for my nose. So please do not make the same mistake that I did. :(

Overall rating: 4.5/5

Will I buy again? Yes though I will try a different one. It'll turn 4 months by mid-November and I am definitely going to try the charcoal one which is for oily skin. I hope it won't be too harsh for my skin though.

Other: When I first opened it, I noticed that the sponge was damp. I don't know what to make of it but it was a bit weird but it does not have any bad smell at all. When dry, it can be really hard that its like a very lightweight stone.

In the Limelight: Luminaze Catalytic Skin Tone Illuminator Dark Spot Corrector Product Review

Remember my lemming post about the Luminaze Catalytic Skin Tone Illuminator Dark Spot Corrector? Well, Santa must've heard my wish and granted my wish early. Last summer, when a cousin came back from the US, I was handed a loot that contains this product which made me squeal with delight. But the sad part is that every photo I took of it that I took was gone. As I was about to transfer pictures to my laptop, I had this glaring error that I had to format my memory card which is such a pain and since I completely used up the product in less than 2 months and threw the empty bottle in the bin, we'd have to settle for a stock photo instead. Anyway, here is my review.

According to Luminaze, this product:

Corrects dark spots.
And we can prove it.

Luminaze actually breaks down melanin for a visible improvement in the appearance of dark spots and overall evenness of skin tone in only 7 days. It's clinically proven to work better and faster than the leading prescription ingredient, and it's gentle enough to use every day.

What I like:

• First of all, I have sunspots and freckles and although they did not completely disappear, they lightened, which allows me to somehow conclude that this product works.
• Does not feel heavy on the skin and non-greasy, which allows itself to be easily absorbed by the skin.
• I was worried that it could dry my skin but I'm glad that it didn't. My skin felt moisturized and nourished.
• Even though the spots are still visible under the naked eye, I am pleased that this product has somehow evened my skin tone which is a plus.
• No allergic reactions, nothing that annoyed my sense of smell either.
• It is in a pump packaging which is hygienic. There are two compartments and pumps - the enzyme and the bio-activator. With one pump, I got the right amount of product for my entire face.

What I don't like:

• I easily ran out of it even though I used it sparingly. Each compartment only contains 15mL of product which isn't much.
• Not locally available and pricey for $120!

Overall rating: 4.5/5 

The product works, if only it weren't THAT expensive. I also have to add that if you are not fond of and allergic to mushrooms, you may want to take a step back before purchasing this item as the Luminaze enzyme in this product is harvested from a mushroom that grows on trees high in the Swiss alps. 

Will I buy again? I would like to but the price is kinda prohibitive. And it also hurts that it's not locally available. I would've loved to see how it could further improve my skin by my wallet tells me that I can't afford it. Story of my life.

In the Limelight: Purbasari Lulur Mandi Putih Scrub - A Product Review

Happy rainy Thursday, everyone. Today, I am finally able to post a review of the product I received from Genson way back in October last year. I decided to use it for months before finally giving it my verdict so I have fully tested it before doing so. Exfoliation is important in keeping our skin, healthy, radiant and glowing as dead skin cells tend to make our skin dull and unhealthy-looking. I, personally exfoliate only once a week because doing it everyday could be harsh and potentially trigger my skin asthma. I was quite excited to use this scrub because I read somewhere that this is better than a different brand of lulur scrub I was using at that moment. Now after using it for 5 months now, here's what I think of the Purbasari Lulur Mandi Putih Scrub.

What I like:

• The texture is rich and creamy and all you need is a small amount for the whole body. I find that its texture makes it easy to spread all over.
• The beads are very fine and I find them to be non-abrasive. What I like even more is the fact that the beads are rounded. Other scrubs have uneven shapes, some with sharp edges that actually hurt the skin instead of just removing dead skin cells.
• My skin looks and feels more radiant after exfoliating with this scrub.
• One full size jar has product enough to last you for almost a year (with non-daily use). It has been five months and I'm not even halfway through it. It still depends on how frequently you exfoliate.
• A little goes a long way. A small amount is enough for my body.
• No irritation and no allergic reaction from this product.
• Locally available at Watson's and inexpensive too. Priced almost the same as the other famous lulur scrub.

What I don't like:

• When I first opened it, I immediately noticed the scent. It is soapy and grandma-ish which turned me off a bit. It is a scent I personally do not like and find a little too strong. The scent lingers while in the shower but goes away after washing the scrub off.

Overall rating:  3.5/5 I like the scrub a lot since it does its job well in removing dead skin cells and making my skin look radiant and healthy. I also like the texture much better than the other lulur scrub. However, the scent is the deal breaker. It justifies my exfoliating once a week because I seriously find it quite hard to tolerate the scent.

Will I buy again? If they come up with a better smelling variant, I would. But as for now, I'll just have to finish the huge tub before making the decision of whether I would repurchase or not.

*It says something about whitening. While I am not too keen on that aspecct, I observed and noticed minor lightening on my skin. I think it can help with prolonged usage to whiten one's skin though I cannot guarantee that it will work and give you satisfactory results based on your preference.*

In a couple of years, I will be turning 30 and I know I should focus more about skin care and anti-aging. My skin has acquired damage over the years of not wearing sunblock, which I know is a mortal sin, and even though the effects are not yet that visible to the naked eye, I know that in just a few years, it will finally take its toll on me. So when I was searching for a product that can repair my skin (as early as now), I came across a new beauty product called Luminaze.

It was actually the first time I encountered the brand which promises to repair blotchy skin appearances, corrects dark spots and sun spots (which are now becoming more and more evident on my skin) while it does that in a natural and harmless way.

What really caught my interest is that the enzyme the brand uses is actually harvested from a mushroom and I love mushroom on a few dishes and on my pizza. But this mushroom grows on trees that are found in the Swiss Alps and the areas or bark that surrounds the mushroom are not that coloured or dark so they formulated something from it. They found out that the enzymes break down melanin in the skin that will decrease or minimize the appearance of sun spots, dark spots, and other signs of skin aging and damage.

I really want to try this product enough to make a lemming post about it. It is not everyday that I post a skin care lemming which means that I badly need such a product in my beauty regimen. I am not after skin whitening as I am already satisfied with my skin color but what I want is to simply minimize if it’s not totally possible to get rid of skin discoloration or those nasty spots on my face and even on my hand and shoulders. Yes, if I get my hands on this product, I will use it on other parts of my body as well unless it says I can’t.

Product Review: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel

As I have mentioned a lot of times on my previous posts, water-based or gel moisturizers work best for my combination-oily skin. While I fell in love with Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief, I have been cheating on it with another moisturizer that pretty much does the same for me and that is the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel. I luckily won this jar from The Beauty Bin's giveaway a few months ago and I thought it would be best to wait for a few months before finally giving it a review. When it comes to skin care products, I think a day or two or even a week won't be enough to test it, thus, the long wait. Anyway, here is my review now.

What I like:

• I like how "watery" the color of the packaging is. The jar is also pretty sturdy as I've dropped it a few times and it never cracked or shattered.
• This is a non-greasy and lightweight moisturizer. It definitely doesn't make my skin oilier than it is.
• It gets easily absorbed by the skin.
• It doesn't just moisturize my skin - it hydrates it. 
• Texture is a bit more runny than Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief and a bit more gel-like as compared to Celeteque Facial Moisturizer. It's just right - not too thick and not too runny or watery either.
• It leaves a semi-matte finish on the skin which makes it a good makeup base, helping my primer and/or foundation glide smoothly.
• The scent initially worried me as it is quite strong but I'm glad that the fragrance in it did not cause any allergic reaction. No break outs either.
• A little goes a long way. A pea-sized amount is enough to cover my entire face and neck.
• I apply this at night and I wake up to a smoother, softer, and more supple skin.
• Works super awesome with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. These two made my skin so much better.
• Since it keeps my skin balanced, it no longer oils up as much as it used to.
• The manufacture and expiry date are visible on the jar.
• Locally available at major department stores and drugstores nationwide.

What I don't like:

• The scent could've been a little less strong or they can simply do away with it. I always apply it in front of a fan so the fragrance would be gone in just a matter of seconds.
• Since the product is in a jar, you'll definitely need a spatula or transfer it to an airless pump bottle for more hygienic ways to use it.
• Does not relieve itch just like the Clinique one does for me but I'm still cool with it as a moisturizer.

Overall rating: 4/5 If the scent isn't that strong, it certainly would've gotten a higher rating from me.

Will I buy again? Yes! It works just like Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief (I know! I gotta stop comparing!) as a moisturizer for me and it is cheaper by a few hundreds so I guess this is a cheaper alternative for me. I will repurchase as long as it doesn't stop working for me and if budget permits.

Hola! I hope you're all having a fantastic weekend. Mine was still pretty busy because I was working earlier today and this week has been stressful. Stressful is the understatement of the year! Product Review: Queen Helene Mint Julep Natural Facial Scrub

To have brighter, clearer, and healthier skin that is more radiant and glowing, exfoliation is something we should definitely not skip in our beauty regimen. It is recommended that we exfoliate at least twice a week so we can get rid of dead skin cells and deep seated dirt that makes our skin look dull and unhealthy. Before I crossed paths with Origins Modern Friction, there was Queen Helene Mint Julep Natural Facial Scrub and I guess it's about time I give it a review.

How the scrub looks

What I like:
- The scrubs are fine, gentle, and non-abrasive and won't tear up the skin leaving it raw. I like the feel of it.
- Smells nice and not overwhelming.
- My skin feels smooth and soft after exfoliating with this scrub.
- Does not break me out.
- I am really surprised that it did not cause any allergic reaction since it has walnut powder and I am allergic to nuts - quite a miracle for me as nuts can be fatal.
- No animal testing.
- It really does exfoliate and remove deep seated dirt on the pores.
- A little goes a long way. I don't need much to exfoliate my face and neck.
- Inexpensive for a big tube (more or less than Php 400) and locally available at Healthy Options.

What I don't like:
- I was initially amazed as to how my skin feels soooo smooth and soft after using this but then it has dimethicone which is a type of silicone. And what does silicone do as a primer? Do the math, dearies. It could be the dimethicone sitting right on top of my skin that causes it to feel smooth.
- It has Methylparaben and Propylparaben, baby! If you're not fond of paraben, stay away from this.

Overall rating: 4/5

Will I buy again? Yes. Only when I'm done with my Origins scrub which isn't locally available.

Product Review: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser + Mini Game Winner

I have been breaking out really bad lately - a lot of red spots accompanied with dry and flaky skin on the cheeks and on the sides of my mouth. I am thinking of three probable culprits - the unstable weather, Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Foundation, and hormones because I was PMS-ing. Whatever the culprit is, I had to figure out a way to soothe my skin and using the cleansers I normally use were out of the picture since they somewhat dry my skin even more. Good thing I saw my Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser for Sensitive Skin glaring at me partially hidden by the big bottles of cleansers. I have totally ignored it because I felt that it didn't cleanse my skin enough because it wasn't squeaky clean. I knew I needed something less drying so I finally used it again and since it's what I have been using for the past few weeks, I think it's about time I give it a review.

What I like:
- Gentle enough for my skin. It did not aggravate my break outs nor did it add any irritation. It also did not further dry my skin.
- Since I finally gave it a chance to do its work on cleansing my face every single day, I realized that it does remove my makeup. The eye shadows that I have been wearing to do the EOTD posts were effectively removed. I just need to use more product if I want to use it for makeup removal. I know a lot of people complained about it not removing their makeup effectively and that is because it is NOT a makeup remover - it is just a very gentle cleanser. But still, it works fine for me and if it does work for you too that way, I'm happy for you. :)
- Does not sting my eyes like other cleansers do!
- Contains no fragrance and my nose loves it!
- Does not leave my skin feeling squeaky clean and I'm sure that it does not strip my skin off its natural moisture.
- Leaves my skin radiant and soft after cleansing.
- When I used a wet tissue (from Japan Home Center that my mom purchased) on my face, it stung, had a burning sensation and my skin felt raw. I immediately cleansed my face with this and it somehow felt soothing and calmed down my irritated skin and it was no longer red after a couple of minutes.
- Locally available at most drugstores and department stores.
- Not that pricey compared to other cleansers I have used.

What I don't like:
- It sometimes feels like it leaves a very thin film of cleanser on my face so I have to rinse it double time.
- For those freaked out by paraben, this has Methylparaben, Propylparaben, and Butylparaben.

Overall rating: 4.75/5 I realized that I need something very gentle for my sensitive skin and this is it.

Will I buy again? Definitely! My mom even made a comment about my skin looking brighter and better since I started using this. Ever heard of the saying Moms know best? :P Though I want to try the Daily Facial Cleanser for Normal, Combination, and Oily Skin (which I understand is pricier).

Tips: If you plan to use this as a makeup remover, squirt some product on a cotton pad/ball then rub it very gently on your face without tugging your skin. You may also want to use a makeup removing cleanser before using Cetaphil and use this as an after-wash cleanser instead to counter the drying effect of the other cleanser. Do the same for eye makeup. It won't do much for heavy duty waterproof mascara but it will do for non-waterproof mascara with just a coat or two. Again, it is supposed to be very gentle for those with sensitive skin and it is indeed gentle.

Product Review: Caudalie Paris Vinoperfect Night Correcting Cream

Some say that we should be using different facial creams or moisturizers for both day and night. I have tried only one night cream before which was way more than 7 years ago and that was the Neutrogena Light Night Cream but broke out with it so I stopped. I honestly never understood why I had to use a different product so I was satisfied with the moisturizer I use during day time. And it was only until I got a sample of this have I used a night cream again. I am seriously not sure what to expect with a night cream so please bear with this review-wannabe.

Product Review: Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief

How's your weekend, guys? Anyway, here's the review of Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief, which I have set aside thrice last week. I've had a pretty bad history with Clinique skin care products, for both skin types 2 and 3 so I never really had high hopes for this product. So on to the review then.

What I like:
- Unlike with other Clinique skin care products, I never broke out with this. I had a back up plan to apply this as a topical gel when I get allergies in case it doesn't work for me since I read somewhere that it also works great that way for them. But I'm really glad it does. This is basically a first for me and Clinique skin care. :)
- It does not moisturize my skin - it hydrates! And that is so much better than simply moisturizing it. It's like a thirst quencher. The good thing about it is that it keeps the moisture level on my skin balanced and normal, thus, making it less oily. This is in gel form and I assume a water-based product which works very well with my skin type.
- Though it isn't unscented as I would have preferred, I'm glad that the scent isn't strong and somewhat mild.
- A little goes a long way. I don't need to slather a lot just get my skin prepped.
- It is easily absorbed by the skin and does not take a long time to dry.
- Since it dries to a matte finish, it works well as a good makeup base. It also helps that my skin feels smoother once it has been absorbed well.
- I apply it on areas that get dry within the day. Like when my cheeks get dry, I just pat on a little and I'm good to go. It doesn't even ruin my makeup when applied over it.
- It says on the tube that it works well as a 5-minute moisture mask and I agree. I don't think it has to be greasy just to know that it is moisturizing.\
- I've had this 30mL tube for 2 months now and I'm only half way through it. And I don't use it just on the face. I apply this on my allergies too.
- Speaking of allergies, it helps relieve the itch since it hydrates the area. Unlike applying alcohol, this does not dry out the skin so it does not aggravate the itching.
- Has a shelf like of 24 months.
- Locally available at Clinique counters.

What I don't like:
- Pretty pricey especially if you buy it directly from the counter. Better have someone purchase it for you at Duty Free or in the US.

Overall rating: 5/5 My skin absolutely and without a doubt loves it! But please note that I have combination-oily skin. I am really not certain if this would be hydrating enough for those who have extra dry to dry skin. Maybe you would need something far more hydrating and moisturizing than this.

Will I buy again? You bet I will! But I'll use up my other moisturizers before I do. :)

Product Review: Alba Botanica Natural Acne Dote Oil Control Lotion

I prefer a short and fuss-free everyday routine when it comes to prepping myself up. That's why I skip primers and rely on moisturizers that also serve as a good makeup base while providing oil control. Luckily, I have found such products in Alba Botanica. This is the second moisturizer I have used (and is currently using) from this brand, the Rainforest Hydrating Oil Control Moisturizer being the first. I liked the latter a lot but to know  if I also like this one, please read the rest of this post for my review. :)

What I like:
- Feels cool on the face, a little refreshing too due to its being a bit mentholated.
- Dries to a not so matte finish but helps keep oil at bay. Face won't be matte all day but it works for at least 4 hours without touching up.
- Smells kinds of medicinal and mentholated. I actually like it.
- Does not break me out. No allergic reactions either.
- Keeps my face moisturized, soft, and smooth all day.
- Has a shelf life of 18 months so yes, you can stray a bit. Just don't forget to store it in a cool place or in your fridge, perhaps. :D
- Packaging is hygienic since it's a squeeze out tube which gives you control on the amount of product you can get.
- Locally available at Healthy Options and inexpensive for less than Php 500.

What I don't like:
- Can be a bit greasy especially on really hot days.
- No SPF nor does it offer any sun protection.

Overall rating: 4/5 I recommend this to those who have combination-oily to oily skin who live in places with cooler climates.

Will I buy again? In as much as I like this, I might not for now. I find that water-based moisturizers such as Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel, and Celeteque Facial Moisturizer (for an inexpensive one) work better for me both as moisturizers (that hydrates the skin too) and as makeup base.
