January Favorites

I can't believe January is almost over. It still feels like it's New Year yesterday yet tomorrow is already February. Anyway, before the months ends, I would like to share the products that I keep reaching out for everyday for the month of January.

1. Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Liquid Foundation- it is the foundation I have been reaching for the most as I love how it stays long on my face (even though it's not as long lasting as Estee Lauder Double Wear) without the heavy feel. Review to follow soon.

2. Chanel Vitalumiere Eclat Radiance Comfort Compact Makeup - as I have mentioned on my review (please click on the link to read my review), the texture got me. And the finish is amazing. Plus a classy compact doesn't hurt either.

3. Laura Mercier Secret Concealer - has replaced MAC Studio Finish as my under eye concealer. Review to follow.

4. Beauty Blender - initially, I thought that I just wasted my money on a sponge. Imagine paying almost Php1500 for a hot pink egg-shaped sponge. But I later on gave it a chance and I really started liking it. Review to follow.

5. Guerlain Blush 4 Eclat in 04 Rosee Du Printemps - the blush I have used alternately with my Shu Uemura Glow Ons. Has 4 shades you can mix and match.

6. Shu Uemura Glow Ons - once again, I will tell you that M Pink 30 will forever be a favorite of mine. Something I use when I'm not sure which blush to wear.

7. Mentholatum Lip Ice in Lemon - my current favorite lip balm (without any tint). The lemony scent gives me a refreshing feeling. Review to follow.

8. Chanel Rouge Allure Lipstick in 74 Comedia - my favorite lipstick. Need I say more? :P

9. Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara - my go-to mascara. Love how it separates my lashes and make them look better. Click on the link to read my review.

10. Revlon Brow Fantasy in Brunette - my favorite eyebrow product! From unruly eyebrows to better looking brows.

11. Alba Botanica Rainforest Hydrating Oil Control Moisturizer - a moisturizer that keeps my skin hydrated while keeping the oilies at bay and makes my skin look luminous and glowing at the same time.

12. Acca Kappa Hibiscus - my everyday scent since I am running low on my fave Clinique Happy (yes, it is a common scent but I don't care, it works well with my body chemistry and I've been using it for a decade now). Love the aquatic floral scent that is so light.

13. Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula - keeps my skin moisturized while making it smell good at the same time.

Yum Moments: Pizza, Pasta, and Italian Chicken at Fazoli's

Yesterday, a couple of friends and I had dinner at Eastwood. They wanted to have a Feng Shui consultation since it's almost Chinese New Year and there are booths in Citywalk 2. They convinced me to also try it, which I eventually did. We chose someone we didn't know was in demand and charged Php3000 in regular sessions but we only had to pay Php400 for 20 minutes. We all exceeded that but she didn't charge us anymore for extra. Anyway, while waiting for our turn, we decided to have dinner at Fazoli's and here's what we had.

I always order their Italian Chicken and Pesto combo. If I remember it right, it costs Php160 or Php170 which is not really bad. Though their pesto (my favorite pasta in the world) is a bit dry, I really love it. I'd rather have this than have something drowning in oil. Yeah, I am referring to the oily pasta I had at Qizia Cafe. Jeez, I really cannot get over how oily (and by far the oiliest pasta I've ever had) their pasta is. And to think it's just right beside a hospital. I hope it's not to make the customers go to the hospital after eating from them. Going back, their Italian Chicken is an absolute favorite of mine. You get two pieces that aren't really small and they taste really good too.

My friend, on the other hand, ordered Pepperoni Pizza and Spaghetti combo. I'm not sure how much the exact cost is but I'm certain that it does not cost more than Php150 bucks.

And the other one was super hungry, probably starving that this is all what's left for me to take a picture of. Haha! :P

Overall, I really love Fazolis's. Even though there were two instances where I looked and spoke with the manager, I still dine at this place. The food is affordable yet yummy and the servings are okay. I also like the ambiance of this place, which, I think is a big factor in choosing a place where to dine to.

Oh, these are the Feng Shui booths in Citywalk 2. I really don't believe these stuff but I just tried it just for the heck of it and I was really freaked out when she asked me things and said some while she seemed so sure about those, and every single thing she said was right. We exceeded 20 minutes and I think it was a total of 30 minutes for us because the girl timing everything had to come by twice to let us know that the time was up. Freaky but interesting and I was like "How the heck did she know all these?" Beats me!

Anyway, I got myself a cute pendant for the Year of the Rat which I and my friend thought looks like the one in Ratatouille. :P And it's only Php150.

Had a great time last night even though I was not feeling well. Oh, I am really falling in love with Lancome Teint Idole Ultra. Wore it last night, was sick and sweat a little but my makeup still looks fine and I only had ot blot just once. Review to follow.

I'd also like to share something. I was never the type of person who asks for signs when it comes to things that are going on in my life. Last night, I dunno what got into me that made me ask for a sign. There is something really bugging me at the moment and since the night was really cloudy from my view and couldn't see any stars, not even the moon, I said that if I see a quarter moon and a star (or at least one of them), then I will go on with that thing. A friend called and while we were talking, I suddenly looked out my window and saw a quarter moon and a star (just one) near it. Then they both faded after just a few seconds and I never saw them again. My jaw literally dropped and I just knew I was making the right decision. Could be coincidence but what a coincidence. I told my friend about it and he said he never really believed those but there's nothing wrong if I do since I saw those 2 things I asked for. He also said that maybe it is true after all. But we'll never know. I am not going to depend on those things. Just like what William Ernest Henley wrote in Invictus, "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul", I truly believe that. But a couple of guidance here and there won't hurt.

Product Review: Guerlain Kiss Kiss Baby Nourishing Lip Balm in 262 Cherry Summer

I have mentioned several times before that I love tinted lip balms. I love how they keep my lips hydrated while adding a hint of color at the same time. After my love affair with Mentholatum Lip Ice Sheer Color, here is another lip balm that I have been using lately - Guerlain Kiss Kiss Baby Nourishing Lip Balm in 262 Cherry Summer. I got this early this month and here are my thoughts on it.

What I like:
- The packaging is divine. It's so luxurious and sophisticated that it will take you back to the Victorian Era.
- It applies smoothly and is non-drying.
- A very pretty sheer medium pink shade that is glossy and looks really pretty both on the tube and on the lips.
- Something that can be applied even without a mirror.
- It has SPF10
- Locally available at Rustan's (not all branches though).


What I don't like:
- Waxy. Texture is pretty similar to Chapstick.
- The scent. Not for someone with a sensitive nose as it can be overwhelming. The scent doesn't easily go away. You have to wait for a few minutes before it fades.
- Expensive for a tinted lip balm. Regular price is Php1680. Even though I got it on sale for Php1344, it's still expensive. I could've bought at least 10 Mentholatum lippies here.


Overall rating: 3/5 I am not totally disappointed with it and neither am I in love with it. But the packaging is absolutely gorgeous that I can't bring myself to dislike it.

Will I buy again? No. The scent is just too much for me and I despise waxy lip balms. I always apply another non-waxy lip balm under and on top of it so I won't feel its being waxy.

Product Review: Alba Botanica Rainforest Hydrating Oil Control Moisturizer

Since I'm not getting any younger, I realized that I have to take care of my skin even more. I'm not afraid of getting old or aging, but as much as possible, I'd like to age in a graceful way, with lesser signs of aging. I then bought skin care products from Healthy Options since I've read that most of their skin care products are natural and devoid of harsh chemicals. The first one I have tried is the Avalon Organics Vitamin C Refreshing Cleansing Gel which I really like. I decided to pair it with a moisturizer which really caught my eye - Alba Botanica Rainforest Hydrating Oil Control Moisturizer. It has the 3 words I've been looking for - hydrating oil control. I need something to help keep the oilies at bay without being too drying for my skin and this seemed to be the perfect product for me. I have been using it for almost a month now and yeah, review time!

What I like:
- It is non-oily and non-sticky and is easily absorbed by the skin in just a few seconds.
- Has a pleasant citrus scent that is not overwhelming and is gone a few seconds upon application.
- Does a pretty decent job when it comes to oil control (though not superb) but still keeps my skin feeling hydrated and moisturized. Definitely not drying.
- Has a pump that dispenses just the right amount of product. A little goes a long way too, one pump is enough for my face and neck.
- I like that it is made of natural ingredients and does not have those harsh chemicals.
- Even though it controls oil, my face does not look too matte and dry. It gives a luminous glow and once my face starts to oil up, I get a dewy look instead of looking like an oil slick.
- No allergic reactions, no itchies, no breakouts.
- The shelf life is indicated on the tube so I won't go beyond the 6-month shelf life.
- The company does not test on animals.
- The company supports the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research. I don't know exactly what they are about but I'm sure it's something good for the environment.
- Locally available at Healthy Options stores.

What I don't like:
- Kind of expensive for Php619 for 42g which will last only for 6 months. But then if you use it daily, day and night, then you'll use it up in no time.
- No SPF so wearing a sunblock is a must, or at least a foundation with SPF.

Overall rating: 4.5/5 It would've gotten a higher rating only if it had SPF. But then, is there really such a thing as a perfect product?

Will I buy again? Definitely! But it has to wait since I have Alba Botanica Acne Dote Oil Control Lotion to use up after this.

Product Review: Avalon Organics Vitamin C Refreshing Gel Cleanser

Ever since my Superhero Soap stopped working for me (broke me out for no reason why), I had to look for a better alternative. When I went to Healthy Options to buy Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap in Peppermint variant, I checked out their cleansers and this one caight my eye so I gladly included this on my purchase. I have been using this 3 weeks to a month now and I guess it's time to give it a review.

 
What I like:
- Effectively removes my makeup even waterproof mascaras and gel liners, leaving no traces of dirt.
- Holds true to being a refreshing cleanser. My face feels fresher and cleaner.
- Has a very nice citrus scent that basically just reminds me of oranges.
- Has a pump that effectively dispenses just the right amount of product.
- Since this is made for normal to oily skin, it works in keeping the oilies at bay. My face is no longer as oily as it used to be.
- Did not break me out.
- Says they are pro-organic and devoid of harsh chemicals.
- Inexpensive for in between Php329-379 for a 250mL bottle which will last me for months.
- Locally available at Healthy Options.

What I don't like:
- It can be too drying for some. Made my skin so dry plus the cold weather added to the dryness. I stopped using it for now and wait until the summer comes.

Overall rating: 4.5/5 This is perfect for those with oily skin. But if you have dry skin, skip this one and get the cleansing milk variant instead.

Will I buy again? Yes!

Product Review: Kanebo Coffret D'Or Blush in PK-22

I know I have mentioned before that I now prefer sheer blushes over pigmented ones and that is the reason why I no longer own any NARS or MAC blushes. Yeah, I let go of NARS Deep Throat which used to be a favorite of mine. Since that major preference change, I started to really appreciate the beauty of Japanese brand blushes. I thank Shu Uemura Glow Ons for taking me to that road less travelled as most people prefer pigmented ones. And here is another sheer blush that I have purchased and really liked since then - Kanebo Coffret D'Or Blush in PK-22.

The blush comes with a separate compact and blush refill. But you can do away without the compact since the blush refill case is pretty sturdy on its own.

What I like:
- A very pretty sheer pale baby pink shade with very fine shimmers that give the cheeks an iridescent glow.
- Just like all Japanese makeups, the texture is amazingly smooth and velvety that is neither chalky nor powdery.
- The blush melts on the skin and blends very well with it.
- Even though this blush is sheer, I find that I only need a few swipes to make it show on my skin. It reminds me of Chanel Joues Contraste in Tea Rose wherein I need to give it a few minutes to blend with the skin and the lovely color then shows up on the cheeks in a very sublime way.
- Unscented.
- For those with darker skin tone, it can be used as a highlighter.
- Can be used on top of a matte blush if you want to add some glow to it.
- Locally available at Rustan's.


What I don't like:
- The compact is without doubt a fingerprint and dirt magnet.
- Only a few shades to choose from.
- The compact is pretty expensive for Php650.
- Pretty expensive for Php1000 for 3.5g of product but for a Japanese brand, it's not as bad as it seems considering how pricey Shu Uemura and Shiseido blushes are. 

Overall rating: 4/5 I really like this blush. I can't get enough of how amazing the texture of this blush is and how lovely the shade is. I was lemming for the Giorgio Armani Sheer blush 10 but I think it's because of this blush that my lemming was gone. I would definitely recommend this blush to anyone who likes sheer blushes. If you prefer pigmented blushes, skip this one.

Will I buy again? Yes but I have to wait until I use this up and my other blushes.

Product Review: Smashbox Photofinish Foundation Primer

They say that having a good base will make applying foundation easier and look better so a lot of people resort to using face primers to prep their skin. Some also say that primers help make foundation last longer. I, for one, have only tried primers twice. The first one is the Span Oil Control Primer from The Body Shop which is a silicone-based transparent gel primer that basically did nothing for me. After two years, I purchased the Smashbox Photofinish Foundation Primer which received raves from consumers. It was an actually impulse buy but I kept my hopes up for this product. Were the raves true for me? Let's see.

I initially thought it was a good product when I felt how smooth my face felt. Then my foundation glided on smoothly and I was even more impressed. After a few minutes, my foundation looked darker and after just an hour, my foundation was almost gone. I used the Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Foundation which has great staying power so it seemed strange to me. I thought it could just be the weather and my oil glands were working harder. Plus my face felt a bit itchy which I related to allergy though I wasn't sure what triggered it.

The second time I wore it, that's when I decided that this product just isn't working for me. A few minutes upon application, my face started to itch and I had red spots and patches all over my face. I then realized that it was actually what triggered the allergic reaction the first time I used it. I knew I had to stop using it. But out of wanting to make this product work for me, I applied a small amount of product on my chin on another day and guess what? It was super itchy then of course, it got red.

I am seriously disappointed with this product as I had high hopes for this. My makeup did not last any longer and I had an allergic reaction with this product.
But then again, when it comes to makeup you can't expect all things to work for you even though it does for others and that is the case here. Didn't work for me in as much as I hoped it would. Plus it doesn't even come cheap for Php850 at Beauty Bar for a small 15mL tube. I could've bought a blush or a tube of lipstick with that price. Having said all these, I will definitely not repurchase this product. And besides, no makeup or even primer can beat having good skin - it's the best base and canvass one should have.

Product Review: Fashion 21 Dipliner

When I was still in the corporate world, I wear eyeliner every single day. It helps open up and define my eyes and somehow makes me look more awake and sharper. But I do not have steady hands and I always end up having streaks and with the oily lids that I have, no pencil liner can last a long time without managing to make me look like a raccoon. But I was glad that I found this product that does not burn a hole in my pocket but does a great job as well. It's my favorite liquid eyeliner - Fashion 21 Dip Liner in Black. It has been a year since I started using this product (I am on my second or probably third tube now though I haven't used it in a long time) so I guess this is the perfect time to give it a review.

What I like:
 - Ease of application. Although my hands are not the steadiest, I can manage to create a fine line on my eyes. It doesn't take a long time for me to be able to do that. Although I see a lot of people tug at their eyelids as they line their eyes, I try not to do that and with this liner, short strokes will do. I have tried the regular form of liquid eyeliner from this brand as well and I really had a hard time using it because of my shaky hands. I don't know how many times I ended up having the product in my eyes. The tip is firm enough and the length is just right to give me enough control over it.
- Staying power. I have mentioned earlier that I have oily lids and it is almost impossible to find a pencil eyeliner that won't smudge on me so I tried using liquid liners instead. This one stays on for hours and I mean hours. I used to work the 9-hour shift and it stays put no matter how hot that day is.
- Easy to remove. Though the staying power is great, it is not difficult to remove. Regular makeup removers, cleansing and/or even facial cleansers do the job in removing this. There is absolutely no need to use cleansing oils just to remove this. Unless of course it is what you really use to remove your makeup.
- Because of the shape of the applicator, it is so easy to create a wing and achieve a cat's eye look.
- Price and availability. I actually forgot how much the exact price is but if I'm not mistaken, it does not cost anything more than Php150. Since this is a local brand, it is widely available on most malls and a few drugstores nationwide.

What I don't like:
- Smells funny
- Even though it lasts for hours, it looks like glue that is flaking at the end of the day.

Overall thoughts: I really like this liner. I have only stopped using this when I started using gel liners. This is perfect for those who wants something that really works without breaking their budget or for those who are just starting with makeup and wants something to practice with.

Will I buy again? Undecided. The only reason why I might not repurchase is that I now prefer gel liners over liquid liners.

Product Review: Laura Mercier Colour Classics Face Palette

Don't you just hate it when you're looking for your lipstick and you can't find it anywhere in your bag but you're sure it's there? Then when you need a quick blush touch up, you once again have difficulty finding your blush? Sucks, right? It takes time and effort and lotsa patience to dig through your things just to find a piece or two of makeup.

That's when palettes come in handy. Whoever invented the makeup palette is a genius! The convenience of having multiple products in one handy compact (except those huge eyeshadow palettes like Coastal Scents and Dollface and others that pop out in the market with different names but get the products from one manufacturer) is that you can bring it wherever you go. More so for those small ones that can easily fit in your purse. I have to admit that I've never had any makeup palette with multiple products before if my memory serves me right (but I have poor memory so I am not totally sure about it) and imagine my excitement when I decided to purchase one last Christmas.

I was checking out the NARS Only You Eye and Cheek Palette at Rustan's Gateway but I didn't like the packaging and I only get 6 products plus the hefty price tag made me think about it first. I then decided to check out the Laura Mercier counter beside it and boy I was glad I did. I saw a lot of holiday palettes and they were all pretty! Out of the many palettes on display, I chose the Colour Classics Face Palette and I gladly went home with it. And time for a review.

The palette comes with a very nice brown velvet pouch. 

I had no idea it came with a Pink Diamond Mini Lip Glace. It's really cute and it looks pretty but I never used it since I found their lip glaces too sticky for my liking.

The palette contains 2 blushes - Plum and Baby Pink and 6 eye shadows that go very well with each other - Deep Night, African Violet and Sparkling Dew and Coffee Ground, Topaz, and Rose (the 3 neutrals)

I like the texture of the eye shadows. Even the matte ones - Coffee Ground and Deep Night are both pigmented and not chalky. The shimmery ones are very pretty and pigmented too. They all apply smoothly and for an eye shadow noob like me, I find them easy to blend.

The blushes are good too. The Baby Pink shade, I think, is a true baby pink shade that is matte but not flat. It somehow reminds me of my Shu Uemura Glow On P Pink 30 sans the peach tones. It is neither chalky nor powdery and gives this "glow from within" look on the cheeks. The Plum shade, on the other hand, was the least appealing product for me because plums never worked for me. I remember using a plum blush and I ended up looking like a battered person and my face basically looked bruised as if I have been slapped over and over. When I had the courage to try it since I really cannot get rid of it, I was surprised that it turned rosy-pink on me and not the plum color I've been dreading. It has very fine shimmers that are not too obvious too. It is not chalky either. I'm so glad to have found a plum shade that works for me.

Having said all these, I am pleased with this palette. I can say that this palette gives value for money since the colour selection and the quality of the products is great. I think the colours complement each other too. The Plum blush can be used with the neutrals while the Baby Pink blush can be used with the darker shades. Another plus is that the compact is not a dirt magnet and the shelf life is also indicated at the back. I have to use this up in 12 months. Well, I never really bought the shelf life for powder products thingie since they last longer as long as they are used hygienically. I also think that the price is reasonable at Php2450. But I promise, I really like this palette a lot. I am not in love with it but I am definitely pleased with it and it is something I would recommend to people.

Yum Moments: Chili Con Carne Cheesedog at Mama Chit's

Again, here is another Yum Moments post. Earlier, I wanted to eat something different since I have been having pizza lately so the place my food trip buddy and I were looking for the last time we met up to eat was where I decided to have snacks or late lunch. We have decided to discover different places here in Marikina where we can find good food. Luckily, it was daytime when I went there so I was able to finally locate it. It's Mama Chit's, a very small American style diner that offers burgers, fries, hotdogs, pizza, pasta, and other stuff. It's really small and you have to have a keen eye or else, you won't be able to spot it. It's along JP Rizal St. in San Roque, Marikina City, a little past the Our Lady of the Abandoned (OLA) Church. And so to get an idea on how it looks like, here are photos.

Told you it's really small. That's why we didn't spot it when we looked for it the first time we wanted to try their food. Here's the entrance.

I think the owner loves the 1950's-1960's because of the decorations. However, I think they went a little overboard with it that everything seems to be all over the place. I honestly think they overdid the decoration. Though I felt like I was taken back to the 50's when I was inside placing my order. They could also be collecting stuff and using them as decor. :)

Oooh, Frank Sinatra. I love listening to his songs. :P And there's this small slot machine too.

I love the ashtray. I would've loved to snag it and take it home but nah, I can't do that. :P

After about 15 minutes, my order finally came. Chili con Carne Cheesedog Sandwich (Php85 or around $2) with Coffeehouse Lemon Iced Tea (Php60 or a little over $1 but I swear to God I saw on the menu that it was only Php40 but maybe they had a price increase).

The bread is made from wheat and I like how it has Parmesan cheese on top. The cheesedog was juicy and the bread was sort of toasted but still soft enough. The chili con carne was, however, a little too dry for my liking. Plus the meat was a little overcooked. It would have tasted better if it wasn't as dry as it was and the meat was cooked just right but nevertheless, a really yummy sandwich and still worth the price. It was overall a good experience except when I asked the lady at the counter what's in their Chili con carne and she simply answered with an annoyed look on her face, "carne". I told her I know it's meat but I wanted to know if it's in a hotdog sandwich or in a burger (because I have had burger with chili con carne before) and she finally understood. When she served my meal, she finally smiled and that annoyed look was gone. Jeez. Haha! Overall, I like this small diner and would definitely come back to try their bestselling burgers.

Product Review: Max Factor False Lash Effect Waterproof Mascara

If I were made to choose just one product or makeup I will forever use on my eyes, I will pick mascara in a heartbeat. I love how it instantly opens up the eyes and makes batting the lashes so much better. I have tried just a few and liked most of them, my favorites being Clinique Lash Power Mascara and Maybelline The Colossal Volume Express Mascara. But since they have already expired, t'was time to throw them in the bin and try something else. Just like what I have mentioned on my Clinique Lash Power review, I don't know if I can bring myself to spend more or less than a thousand bucks just for a single tube of mascara, so I decided to try something new which is the Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara. I got the waterproof variant because I have not checked out reviews about it yet only to find out when I checked MUA that the non-waterproof variant is better. But heck, I already have it so I had no choice but to just use it. I didn't want to go back to the mall just to have it exchanged as I might end up going home with a few more things. :P

The brush reminds me of the brush in Cover Girl Lash Blast. It's bulky and big and made of rubber.

This mascara does a pretty good job at separating and lengthening my lashes. As for volumizing, I really do not see any difference but I can say that my lashes look better. I like the fact that I can apply 2-3 coats without any clumping. It makes a lot of difference without looking unnatural, which is quite against its being the False Lash Effect mascara. It doesn't look as if I have false eyelashes on which is okay with me since I'm all for the natural look. Basically if you want dramatic lashes, this is not the mascara for you. But if you like "my-lashes-but-better" that still looks natural, you may want to consider trying this one. As I have mentioned earlier, I got the waterproof variant. 

When I went out last Monday, I had this mascara on for 12 hours. On the 7th hour, I noticed a little smudging on my under eyes and I had nothing else on my eyes other than this one. so it may be waterproof but definitely not oil and sweat proof. But hey, 7 hours isn't bad. 

A lot of those who reviewed this in MUA complained about the difficulty in removing this mascara but I honestly do not have any problems with it. I just use Celeteque Cleansing Oil and all the mascara's gone plus my cleanser is very effective in removing makeup. So I guess the ease or difficulty of removing it depends on what you use to remove your makeup. 

Overall, a really nice mascara that is worth trying but I still prefer Clinique over this one. I realized that I could've gotten myself a tube of that mascara since this one does not come in cheap, being priced at Php695. But then I got another one from a different brand so I guess it's all good. If I were to repurchase this mascara, it would have to be the non-waterproof variant which has waaay better reviews than this one.
